定义域(domain of definition)、值域(codomain of definition)指对一个关系，所有有关系的两个元素中可能的第一元素的元素所构成的集合。

定义

对 [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] 和 [math]\displaystyle{ Y }[/math] 上的关系 [math]\displaystyle{ R }[/math] ：

定义集合 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{ x \mid \exist y ( x R y ) \right\} }[/math] 为 [math]\displaystyle{ R }[/math] 的定义域，记作 [math]\displaystyle{ \operatorname{dom} R }[/math] ，也有人记作 [math]\displaystyle{ D(R) }[/math] 。

定义集合 [math]\displaystyle{ \left\{ y \mid \exist x ( x R y ) \right\} }[/math] 为 [math]\displaystyle{ R }[/math] 的值域(codomain of definition / range)，记作 [math]\displaystyle{ \operatorname{ran} R }[/math] ，也有人记作 [math]\displaystyle{ R(R) }[/math] 。
