超运算列(hyperoperation sequence)指一个运算列，从后继或加法开始，通过重复运算并简写重复次数得到下一个新的运算。序列中的每个对象叫超运算(hyperoperation)，第 [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] 个对象叫超- [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] 运算([math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math]-ation)。
定义
超运算列(hyperoperation sequence)是运算 [math]\displaystyle{ H_n:\mathbb{N}^2 \to \mathbb{N} }[/math] 构成的序列，其中每个 [math]\displaystyle{ H_n }[/math] 满足：

其中称 [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math] 为超运算的底数(base)， [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math] 为超运算的指数(exponent)或超指数(hyperexponent)， [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] 为超运算的级别(rank/grade) ，运算 [math]\displaystyle{ H_n(a,b) }[/math] 称为 [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math] 的 [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math] 次超- [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] 运算(the [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math]th [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math]-ation of [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math])。

注：对较小的超- [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] 运算([math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math]-ation)，使用希腊数字前缀加“-ation”构成名称。

高德纳箭头
对 [math]\displaystyle{ n\geq 3 }[/math] 的情况，可以用 [math]\displaystyle{ a \uparrow\uparrow\dots\uparrow b }[/math] 表示相关运算，其中箭头的数目为 [math]\displaystyle{ (n-2) }[/math] 个。同时对较靠前的运算就正常使用加法和乘法表示。
